Down to their last six matches Wythenshawe Town knew there were no room for slip-ups and if they were to achieve their ambition of Champions they would probably need to win every game. In this match they were against a side that had lost their place in the top five and so would be putting in 100% effort in order to get back in the play-off places. The starting line-up was unchanged from the one that beat Barnoldswick Town, but it was good to see Khius Metz back on the teamsheet.
The visitors almost fell for an eight minute sucker-punch when, with the defence appealing for offside, Dylan Fitzgerald was allowed to carry one but fortunately his strike missed the upright by inches.
The half continued with both sides playing attractive football without creating any serious chances, most of the attacks foundering on two well organised defences.
On seventeen minutes it looked as though Fitzgerald had once again beaten the offside trap but this time the Lineswoman’s flag was raised
GOAL!! The deadlock was broken on 19 minutes, and it came from one of Sam Sheridan’s accurate free kicks. A foul on Tom Bentham saw Sheridan placing the ball far out on the left. The strike was perfectly placed to find the head of Louis Jeanne waiting at the far post and his headed cross found Bentham in his favourite place, about two yards out. It still needed a powerful challenge to force the ball over the line.
There was little else to report in the first half with both defences firmly in charge, however a back header by Aaron Charmers saw the Prestwich Goalkeeper Russell Saunders reaching full stretch to prevent what would have been a certain goal.
A couple of efforts by William Riding that were blocked by defenders and that was about it. The crowd had been entertained by some excellent football but not much goalmouth action.
The visitors began the second period under pressure and a scramble in the six-yard box saw Fitgerald scoop the ball over the bar when faced with an open goal. A further scramble on the hour mark was cleared by a desperate Town defence. Greg Hall had been called into action several times in the half and a cross from the left saw him collect the ball over the heads of the opponents but only at the second attempt.
The heavy pitch was taking it toll on the players and George Boyd and Chinedu Uche were brought on to add some impetus.
A break by the hosts was halted by a Linesman’s offside flag which seemed to be unfair, but video replays showed the decision was correct and a very good one.
As the half progressed the visitors once again began to take charge and on seventy minutes a long cross by Sheridan found Bentham unmarked in the middle of the area, but his header was well anticipated by Saunders.
GOAL!! A long ball out of defence by Sheridan found Bentham a lonely figure near the halfway line and a yard inside his own half so offside was out of the equation. Controlling the ball in a way that only comes with experience he passed the ball inside to Boyd who had timed his run perfectly, and waiting for Saunders to commit himself he slid the ball past him and into the bottom left corner of the goal. It was a goal that came with experience, the ages of the three players concerned totalling one hundred and three.
The goal stung Heys into action as they could see their hopes of a play-off place fading and when Keiron Molly broke through on the left a goal looked certain. However, Hall had other ideas and he flung himself full-length to pull of a save that could only be described as world class. The Wythenshawe Town Number One finished this game black and blue following attention by some of the opposition players but as usual there was no complaining and he carried on as usual.
That was about it as far as serious action was concerned, a couple of efforts by Prince Jenkins that flew over the bar and a wonderful interception by Mannu Omorogbe denied Prestwich a consolation goal and gave the visitors a deserved three points and a clean sheet.
Wythenshawe Town FC Man of the Match was given to Emmanuel Omorogbe being described as "The rock at the centre of defence - outstanding!"
Prestwich Heys Man of the Match was given to Jacon Ngoy being describe as "Posed a threat throughout the game"
